Institute of Veterinary Preventive Medicine — Ranipet

The Institute of Veterinary Preventive Medicine is a state-owned biological vaccine production unit under the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Government of Tamil Nadu. It is involved in the production of veterinary vaccines, diagnostic reagents, diluents, and pharmaceutical products such as ointments and liniments, which are supplied free of cost to government veterinary hospitals and dispensaries, and on a cost basis to other veterinary institutions.

  • The institute was originally established as "Serum Institute" in 1932 at Madras Veterinary College.
  • In March 1948, it was relocated to its present campus in Ranipet, initially spread across 129 acres, and currently occupying 78.57 acres.
  • In 1954, it was renamed as the Institute of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (IVPM).
  • IVPM was the first government veterinary institution to upgrade its vaccine production facilities to comply with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) standards.

Role and Functions

The role of IVPM is to ensure the timely availability and supply of vaccines to the field for the prevention of various livestock and poultry diseases. It also supports the disease control programme for Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) through the FMD Collaborative Centre under the National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) scheme.

Upgradation of the Pharmaceutical Division and the Brucella and Diagnostics Unit to GMP standards is currently in progress.
